A Poem For My Anti Valentine

Let me be clear before I begin
A Valentine’s Day verse this is not, please rest assured
Save your blushes, silence your tuts,
For flowers, chocolate, hearts and cards I know you think absurd
So without chutzpah, without sounding trite
I offer you these words
Not a teddy, rose nor cupid in sight.
Today’s the day for all love birds to sing their song
Today by decree we have to be romantic
With the weight of expectation and the fear of disappointment
I was being pedantic
Lipstick kisses, hearts of felt, cuddly toys
A riot of red on red
Cute confections, a day to make up for a year of love unsaid
So silence the radio, cover the billboards, kill the advertising furore
For I know already, all that you abhor
But know this, in my heart you shine
My dearest love, be my anti Valentine.
